In a Nutshell
I am a mummy, wife and primary school teacher from Edinburgh.
A Wee Bitty More
My name is Steph and I am 27. I was Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland. I love spending time with my fantastic family. One of our favourite things to do is go walking as a family. We have walked many hills and paths around Scotland and beyond and love spending time outdoors. I tend to drink tea an awful lot and of course you cannot drink tea without cakes and biscuits in Britain, it’s only good tea drinking etiquette!
One of my favourite things to do in the world is reading, despite being fairly dyslexic and the process taking far longer than it seems to do for most of my peers. In my opinion my having to read things several times gives me a better understanding of what is going on. Since starting my own blog I am becoming more confident in my own abilities both as a reader and a writer, I love to meet new people and because of my blog I am gaining confidence doing this online.
I have always loved all things Disney, going so far as to have a subtle Disney theme running through our wedding last year. With Mickey and Minnie attending the formal ceremony, a reading in the ceremony from Winnie the Pooh, ceremony music from Toy Story, Mickey Mouse confetti, Mickey and Minnie cake toppers and of course a Mickey and Minnie logo it’s fair to say I will be sharing my love of Disney with our children. My husband and I have now been to Disneyland Paris three times, including staying there twice, I cannot wait to see my wee boys face when he enters the Magical World of Disneyland.
Another love I share with my husband is music, we love a good concert and there is always something playing in our house, we love a wide genre of music, our latest favourites being nursery rhymes and soothing classical music. Naturally you cannot spend your entire life in Edinburgh and not love comedy and theatre, spoilt we are with the Fringe and International festival, we always find time to take in a show or two in August.
I have always been passionate about helping others and found teaching to be exactly the kind of job I always dreamed of. I get to work with children all day and share my ideas with colleagues and other professionals. Since graduating from Edinburgh University I have been teaching in Edinburgh for five years,I have taught mostly infants.
I have also enjoyed mentoring student teachers and newly qualified teachers. I am passionate about caring for our environment so part of my role as a teacher was the Eco Schools coordinator where I successfully managed a staff and pupil group enabling the school to earn their second green flag. I enjoy wider school life and am actively involved in extra curricular activities and clubs where possible. I very much enjoy incorporating the local community and environment in my teaching and often use this as a basis when starting learning journeys with pupils.
My next challenge at work is to set up a nurture group. I love working with smaller groups of children so this will be a fantastic opportunity for me developmentally to work with different groups and stages of children.
I love learning and I love expanding my knoweldge on lots of different subjects. I use OpenLearn to find out about things that interest me but also to further develop my professional knowledge as a teacher. I am currently enjoying the ‘Digital Scholar’ course, it has been really useful in developing my blog further. I hope to continue to use OpenLearn to continue my journey of lifelong learning.
So far being a mummy is my favourite job. My boy and I are very fortunate we live with my husband and his daddy, he is a wonderful daddy, my rock and I can honestly say I wouldn’t be the Mother I am without him.
Our gorgeous son was born after a very quick labour and despite getting stuck on the way out in perfect condition. Quickly after his birth he gave us a fright with a suspected twisted stomach. We have since learned our boy likes to give us false alarms and it may be something which he is going to keep up for quite some time. He is perfect to us and we wouldn’t change him for the world. One day we hope to be able to give him a sibling but not too soon, we need time to adapt and enjoy our first born.
